Launch The Gospel

Some time ago, I began thinking upon the ‘why question’ behind the increasingly lukewarm state of Christianity in America. While there are many factors that contribute to the predicament of lukewarm Christianity in America today, I think there are two primary, underlying factors to which we must turn our attention. 

First, I think we have lost sight of the Gospel's power and authority for life after coming to Christ. The Gospel is not a singular message of salvation, but an eternal encouragement toward the ongoing biddings of its message. In I Corinthians 15:19, Paul remarks that if believers only have hope in Christ for this life, we are of all people most to be pitied. I would say the inverse is also true; if we embrace the news of the Gospel only for its efficacy in securing eternal life in heaven, with no power to assist us in the here and now, we are likewise to be pitied.  

Second, I think we have neglected to help new believers relate to the historic, biblical storyline that brought about their salvation. I believe knowing the anatomy of the Gospel, and our personal connection to it in Christ, is a powerful antidote to spiritual indifference. The Gospel is intended to alter us emotionally and subjectively. When we understand our place in God's plot line and the extent to which He has made us new, the Gospel becomes ours in experience. The alternative is a life of spiritual oblivion, void of a vibrant walk with God.
